Welcome to a fascinating look at the world of classical conditioning(*)! In this post, we will explore how this unconscious association always occurs in some way and why we cannot escape it. Get ready for an exciting journey!
(*) Classical Conditioning: A learning process formulated by Ivan Pavlov in which a neutral stimulus becomes associated with an unconditioned stimulus, eventually triggering a conditioned response.
Conditioning in Everyday Life
Have you ever wondered why we automatically respond to certain stimuli? The answer lies in classical conditioning. Even if we don’t consciously notice it, we are constantly being conditioned. From advertisements that lead us to buy certain products to our personal likes and dislikes—it is omnipresent.

The Inescapable Nature of Conditioning
What makes classical conditioning so inescapable? Well, it’s because it occurs on a fundamental level within our brains. Our senses are constantly absorbing stimuli from our environment, and our brains link these stimuli with certain responses. These connections are strengthened and solidified over time, causing us to react to certain stimuli automatically, without any conscious intention.
Thus, classical conditioning is an inescapable force in our lives. It continuously occurs in some form and influences our responses to stimuli. By becoming aware of this fact and handling it more consciously, we can gain greater control over our thoughts and actions. So let’s acknowledge its power and harness it to our advantage!
What Does This Mean for Our Dogs?
Our dogs experience the same as we do; associations always occur in some way. Therefore, if a trainer promises to train without conditioning, it is scientifically impossible. The question is more about whether the desired behavior is being learned and whether it is pleasant for the dog.
So let’s use this learning opportunity for our purposes and create a positive expectation in the dog. It’s like painting the world a little rosy for our four-legged friend.
